hey all, i’m looking into the skywest cadet program and wanted to pick everyone’s brain here. i like this particular cadet program because there isn’t any commitment and they don’t give you any monetary incentive. i spoke with them today and they said even though i’m not teaching at one of their schools i could still participate in the program. the seniority they give you is benefits seniority, not company seniority. you’re still bottom of the list when it comes to base bids, equipment bids, schedule bids, etc. skywest is by no means a bad company, in fact they’re definitely the first place i’m looking when i reach atp mins, but the cadet programs are largely useless. the main benefit of the cadet program is the seniority you get over your peers in the new hire class.
i worked in one of their maintenance bases for a year and plan on applying for a pilot slot there once i have the hours. i think you got the wrong idea about the cadet program, the seniority basically puts you to the front of the class as far as choosing sims and bases and stuff. i just finished ground school at skywest and the seniority that the cadets get is pretty dope. do it because of the advantage it could give you with class seniority. you never know when an extra sixty numbers of seniority could come in handy. i’m in it now, do it because even if you don’t go there they don’t hold anything against you. i’ve thought about doing some of these cadet programs but the main problem ( i think ) is that it isn’t offered unless you instruct at one of their partner schools. i don’t really like the idea of going having too agree to work somewhere for x amount of years or until i’ve fulfilled their contract.
