i am taking a basic sas 9 class right now and i want to take the certification exam if studying for it is manageable for me. i definitely don’t want to take the test twice so if i don’t stand much of a chance of passing i would rather put it off. would someone like me (short on time and not an experienced programmer in any language) be smart to take it while i remember the material or wait to have time to study/memorize? i’m not as detail oriented as a real programmer so it looks like i’ll definitely need to absorb as much test prep as i possibly can to get ready for this. it’s not very practical (but the certification is valued by employers). i have the base certification as well, and like the op, i had very little programming experience before it. some courses only prep you for as much as they can, but they don’t prep you for everything on the exam.
i take tests very well, and i struggled because we only got through 70% of the potential material in the semester. nothing surprising, what’s in the book is what’s on the test, but you have to know it pretty well. i would really make sure you have the content of the study manual very well committed to memory. i took and passed the exam in june. i know it is expensive, but i highly recommend you get a copy of the sas prep book, and go through the quizzes at the end of each chapter to test yourself. i thought my sas class was very good, but there were a couple topics in the book we didn’t cover (and we covered many topics that aren’t on the exam.) also, and i know this is annoying because it’s an additional cost (like $50), but i found the official sas practice test helpful as well. i just took the test on friday and passed it.
