reddit dog training

but i put a lot of time and effort into training my pup and she’s still only 5 months old so she is hit or miss sometimes, but her behavior 90% of the time is favorable. but then i meet other friends dogs or people around the neighborhood and they have literally no control. at a big dog that isn’t even looking at them. hitting their dogs! and people see me and chloe and they’ll say “how did you train her so well? wow, your dog is so well behaved!” countless times do i go into a home with a barking dog and people yell “shut up! be quiet!!”

and i’m just sitting here like “well now you’re barking…..” the reason this came up was there was a woman at petsmart, she had a very large pit bull and she was gripping his thick leash with both hands trying to control him. she then leans over her dog, and screams “can you sit down! sit!!!” i felt kind of rude because i brought my dog to petsmart with me and use it as a training opportunity to have her not jump at the distractions. so she’s sitting for me, being calm, as we stand behind this woman losing it at her dog. they probably have “sit” working at home and she just assumed that the dog would sit once outside. anyways, sorry for the rant, it’s just a new thing that catches my eyes now. they’re not necessarily bad owners or people, but i don’t think they thought about the effort that goes into raising a well behaved pup because it looks so easy when you’re watching someone else handle their dog well, but it can actually be challenging once you try yourself. a small little butt pat i’ll let pass, but full on slapping your dog on the butt repeatedly is not how you build a good relationship imo, but i may be wrong.

i own two dogs, both eleven months old now. since i got them i’ve been looking up ways to train them from different platforms and have joined a dog training group in my neighborhood in order to maximize my knowledge about dog training best i can and since i got into this world i’ve come to learn that dog owners and trainers can be very judgemental. nothing anybody does is right, everybody is a “bad owner” and “bad trainer” or using “wrong methods”, feeding the wrong foods, not spending enough time with their dogs, spending too much time with their dogs, not exercising their dogs enough, exercising too much and “should have their dogs taken away from them” . nobody can agree on anything. i never tell anybody anything i do with my dogs or how/what they are fed anymore because of fear of being judged. what is going on?
