the peloton is great for that, don’t get me wrong, but none of the rides they offer “feel” like mountain bike rides. don’t get me wrong, i know that the classes offered on peloton are fantastic for endurance and cross-training, but it would be so cool to also be able to do classes that actually mimic a mountain bike ride. those are definitely some of the best for mountain biking, and would probably make up a big part of any mtb-themed program. i’m a mountain biker but live in an area where the riding tends to generally be long climbs followed by long downhills (or vice versa) moreso than anything with fast up and downs, though i’ve certainly ridden in areas that are like that. i’ve only had the peloton for two months, but i’ve already been seeing improvements to my mountain biking just taking an assortment of classes.
for my style of riding i’ve thought about doing 20-45 minute climb rides alternating with 10-15 min low impact rides (from denis / matt / christine / jj, whose low-impact rides tend to be more like recovery or technique rides as opposed to rides where you just don’t get out of the saddle) to simulate a local mountain bike ride. don’t get me wrong, a lot of it translates, so i know climb rides are great for mountain biking. just like squatting is great for mountain biking, but it’s nothing like actually riding a mountain bike. i totally agree it’s a great tool for mountain biking. smooth pedal strokes and quiet upper body and all that is great, but i ride flats and my upper body is almost never quiet when riding technical singletrack.
