i will be hiking the tasmanian overland track in january 2018, that is middle of summer in australia with average daily temperatures between 10-23 degrees / 50-73f. that being said, in the very very unlikely event that you get lost or get caught in a blizzard and need to camp on the trail, youll probably want the filter… but that’s really unlikely, even as unpredictable as tasmania’s weather is. but it’s a really minor weight saving and it may very well just be worth the comfort, especially for sitting around camp. maybe go the way of ponchos and forgo shell jacket and your pants but im not sure how well itll work in the wind the alternative is to ditch your tent and sleep in huts all the way but i suppose you didn’t go to tasmania to be shut indoors. do you have your lighterpack link for the olt?
or you can add another 9km to the next hut. it’s a nice trail, if the weather is good you can go for a swim in the lakes. when it rains the trail turns into a stream but there are boardwalks over the boggiest parts and the steeper portions have steps cut into them, presumably so the rain doesn’t cause mudslides. i got a lot of feedback about snow, so the thinking is i want to save the weight of the puffy down jacket…but instead layer base merino then long polyester shirt then fleece then nylon shell jacket. while the main track is incredibly obvious, some of the side trips are on smaller tracks, and if one wants to branch off and do those a map is a necessity, and probably a compass just in case.
