but my kindle is set up to display the text in a single column, narrower than a page, and i can still fly along that way. as a bit of bravado (i was comparing notes with a buddy of mine who was taking the test also), i simply stared hard at the page of text on my screen, in the center, and focused hard for maybe five seconds. but when i took the test, i got enough right that the test results confirmed i had indeed read and retained the info, and it charted my results at 7500 words per minute. i try to read some part of joyce’s ulysses once a year, preferably all of it. well, non-fiction lends itself to it more, simply because for me it is a case of jamming the info into my head. you get used to it though the more you do it, and won’t get tired if it is something you do regularly. improved, believe it or not. when i was in 4th grade, our teacher got a projector that he could set at various speeds (it would show one line of text at a time; we were quizzed after the reading); we all increased our reading speed over the year. for example, elevate has a speed reading module that is free, but it only pops up occasionally in the daily free mode. on it, you read one word at a time.
