there was a post on runnit earlier about a hs girl looking to get her mile time down to 5:00. the post led to a somewhat heated debate between a friend and i who are training together for a half. some caveats- we’re not talking about the average person (who in the states is in no shape at all), but the average runner, which to me (and i know this is arbitrary, feel free to correct me) means a male who can run a half at around a 9 minute pace. i have also found a variety of opinions and “statistics” on various running forums, and am curious what y’all think. there is a big difference between 5 flat, 5ish, and almost 6. considering that the average club runner runs an 18 min 5k, which is 3 x 6min miles, a single 5 min mile is achievable. for a 50 year old man, it is 81.61%, which is national class. a 4:30 mile requires some natural talent in running, as well as training.
especially for the “average person”, let alone the “average runner” my best ever mile was a 4:53 as a sophomore in high school. honest to pete, i firmly believe that if you give a man (sorry, ladies, the numbers are going to be slightly different for y’all) all the time in the world to train, every last one of us could run at least a 4:40. now, this is assuming that you’re starting that training as a reasonably in-shape young person. some people are just honestly too big or don’t have the talent. just look at dii track meets, a good portion of them are scholarship athletes and yet you don’t see as many people as you would think going ~4:25 in the 1500m. like six days a week and my shortest run would be no less than six miles with my longest runs going up to 15. i pushed myself to the point where i hurt my knee very bad and had to stop go so hard. i can say that right before i got hurt, my fastest mile was 6:08. now i know that many people out there are capable of destroying my time, but for me that was, and still is the fastest i could ever imagine getting my body to go. you really need some hard interval training to get the mile time down.
