so i finished my training cycle and after a couple of days off went back in for some max singles, just to see if my training had been on point up to this. i skipped the base mesocycle because of my history and went right into the intense phase. because i was going to be pulling a great deal of reps, i decided that i would use straps on most if not all of the worksets, just to cut down on asymmetries and reduce wear-and-tear. far and away the easiest week as sets of 5 gave way to sets of 3. between the accessory and recovery work, i felt good enough to hit a rep-out on my last set of the week.
a couple things went wrong, foremost that i wasn’t as focused on technique as i went up to the platform. i firmly believe the strength was there, but i couldn’t show it on that attempt on that platform on that day. combine all of that with my background in exercise science, physical therapy, and my training history and i was just about as prepared as a person could be to run smolov for deadlift and survive. 4 sets of 9 at 70% is less than desirable if i only have a few weeks leading up to a meet as well. there were a few isolated weeks last summer and during that fall semester in which i was so overwhelmed that i didn’t make it to the gym, but that was much more due to a lack of time management skills than actually not having the time.
